What Is Azure Infrastructure

Azure infrastructure is the collection of foundational cloud resources, compute, storage, networking, and identity, that host and connect your applications and data on Microsoft Azure. It spans the virtual machines and container platforms that run your workloads, the virtual networks, subnets, gateways, and firewalls that connect and protect them, the storage accounts and managed disks that hold your data, and the identity and access layer (Entra ID) that controls who can do what.

Done properly, Azure infrastructure is not a pile of resources someone clicked together in the portal. It is a structured, policy-governed environment, organized into management groups, subscriptions, and resource groups, with consistent naming, tagging, networking, and security baselines. That structure is what makes the platform auditable, cost-controllable, and safe to grow. Getting the foundation right early is far cheaper than retrofitting governance onto a sprawling, inconsistent estate later.

Key Capabilities and Use Cases

Our Azure infrastructure work covers the full set of foundational capabilities enterprises need:

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Virtual machines, scale sets, and managed disks for workloads that need full OS control, lift-and-shift migrations, line-of-business applications, and specialized servers, sized and configured for performance and cost.
  • Networking. Hub-and-spoke virtual network topologies, network security groups, Azure Firewall, Application Gateway, Private Link, ExpressRoute or VPN connectivity to on-premises, and DNS, designed for segmentation, low latency, and a strong security perimeter.
  • Identity and access. Entra ID integration, role-based access control (RBAC), Privileged Identity Management, and conditional access so least-privilege is enforced across the environment.
  • Landing zones. Azure landing zones, Microsoft's prescriptive, enterprise-scale foundation, that establish governance, security, networking, and management baselines before workloads ever land, giving you a platform ready to scale across teams and business units.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Bicep, ARM templates, or Terraform to define your environment as version-controlled, repeatable code, deployed through CI/CD pipelines so every change is reviewed, testable, and consistent.

Common use cases include migrating data centers to Azure, building a governed foundation for a new product, standing up disaster recovery in a second region, modernizing legacy applications, and establishing a multi-subscription enterprise platform that many internal teams can build on safely.

How ARC Designs and Deploys Azure Infrastructure

We follow a structured engagement model so your Azure infrastructure is right the first time.

Discovery and design. We start with your requirements, workloads, compliance obligations, connectivity needs, and growth plans, then design a target architecture: subscription and management-group structure, network topology, identity model, security baseline, and naming/tagging standards. The design is documented and reviewed with your stakeholders before any resource is created.

Landing zone deployment. We stand up the governed foundation, management groups, policies, networking, identity, logging, and security controls, using Microsoft's enterprise-scale landing zone guidance so the platform is enterprise-ready from day one.

Infrastructure as Code. Everything is deployed through Bicep or Terraform and source control, not manual portal clicks. This makes the environment reproducible, auditable, and easy to extend, and it eliminates the configuration drift that plagues hand-built estates.

Workload deployment and migration. With the foundation in place, we deploy or migrate your workloads, VMs, containers (AKS or Container Apps), app services, and data services, into the appropriate landing zones with the right network, identity, and monitoring already wired in.

Validation and handover. We validate security, connectivity, performance, and cost configuration, then hand over documentation and, if you choose, transition into ongoing Azure infrastructure management.

Best Practices and Governance

A strong platform stays strong only if it is governed. We build to the Azure Well-Architected Framework, applying its five pillars, reliability, security, cost optimization, operational excellence, and performance efficiency, as concrete configuration decisions rather than slogans.

On security, we enforce least-privilege RBAC, network segmentation, encryption at rest and in transit, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, centralized logging in Azure Monitor and Log Analytics, and Azure Policy to prevent non-compliant resources from being created in the first place. On cost, we implement tagging for showback/chargeback, right-sizing, reserved instances and savings plans where appropriate, autoscaling, and budget alerts, so spend is visible and controlled instead of a quarterly surprise. On governance, Azure Policy and management-group structure enforce standards automatically across every subscription, which is the only way governance scales as your estate grows.

Why ARC

Al Rafay Consulting is an AI-Powered Microsoft Solutions Partner and a 3x Microsoft Solutions Partner specializing in Azure, SharePoint, and Microsoft 365. With 13+ years, 300+ engagements, Inc. 5000 (#749) and Inc. Regionals (#57) recognition, 557% growth, and 100% client retention, we bring senior cloud engineers who design to Microsoft's own reference architectures and document every decision. Our Chicago-area HQ in Bolingbrook, IL and Karachi delivery center give you specialist depth with global delivery coverage.

Case Study

ARC has partnered with BioMed Realty across a seven-year Microsoft engagement, growing their environment from SharePoint into a full business intelligence platform, the kind of durable platform work that depends on a well-architected foundation underneath. We bring that same discipline to every Azure infrastructure build: a governed, IaC-deployed landing zone with security, networking, and cost controls in place before workloads land.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Azure infrastructure?
Azure infrastructure is the foundational set of cloud resources, compute, storage, networking, and identity, that hosts and connects your applications and data on Microsoft Azure. Built well, it is a structured, policy-governed environment organized into management groups, subscriptions, and resource groups with consistent security, networking, and cost controls, not just a loose collection of resources.
How much does it cost?
Cost has two parts: ARC design-and-deployment engagement, and your ongoing Azure consumption (which depends on the workloads you run). We scope the engagement to your requirements during a free assessment, and our design work, right-sizing, reservations, and cost governance, is specifically aimed at keeping your monthly Azure spend efficient rather than inflated.
How long does setup take?
A governed landing-zone foundation can typically be deployed in two to six weeks depending on complexity, connectivity, and compliance requirements. Migrating or deploying workloads on top of it is scoped separately. Because we deploy with Infrastructure as Code, the foundation is fast to stand up and easy to extend afterward.
Why choose ARC for Azure infrastructure?
ARC is a 3x Microsoft Solutions Partner with 13+ years, 300+ engagements, and 100% client retention. We design to the Azure Well-Architected Framework and enterprise-scale landing zone guidance, deploy everything as code, and bake in security, governance, and cost control from day one.
